People often ask us, How high is a shipping container? As leading industry manufacturers, we have all the dimensions for you.

So just exactly how high is a shipping container? Let’s get specific…

Because our shipping containers are built from durable steel and made to withstand tough conditions, the internal and external heights differ. This is an important consideration to keep in mind.

For example, the internal height of a general purpose shipping container is 2.38m. But the external height is 2.59m (8’6″). Importantly, these height measurements are the same for 10, 20, as well as 40 foot general purpose shipping containers.

8’6″ is regarded as the standard height for shipping containers. There are, however, other options and variants.

If you have a particularly tall load to transport, then a flat rack container is the perfect solution.

We sell both 20 and 40 foot flat rack containers. Both of these sizes have 3 different variations: collapsible end, fixed end, and platform flat rack.

In addition to flat rack containers, other options for tall consignments include high cube and open top shipping containers.

At 9’6″ high, a high cube container is a full foot taller than standard shipping containers. In a 40 foot container, this equates to a whopping 12% increase in volume.

Similarly, open top shipping containers are also 9’6″ in height. The difference here, however, is that the roof bows are removable. This allows consignments to be lowered directly into the container via a crane.
